EU Finance Day 2026: Financing Competitivenes

High-level panel discussion on pension funds and EU competitiveness financing at Berlin conference

Kinga Stanislawska joined a high-level panel at the EU Finance Day 2026, hosted by the European Commission at the European House Berlin on 10 June.

The topic: "Financing Competitiveness: What role for pension funds?"

The session tackled a question central to Europe's growth agenda. How can the EU unlock more venture capital financing, and what role should pension institutions play?

Kinga was joined on stage by: Klaus Stiefermann, Chairman of PensionsEurope and Managing Director of aba Alex Seddon, Head of Impact and Private Equity at M&G Catalyst Christian Roehle, Co-Head of Investment Management at KfW Capital

Moderated by Agnieszka Wojdyr, European Commission (DG GROW).

Key takeaway from the discussion: pension institutions exist first to deliver secure retirement outcomes. Their investment strategy follows from the structure of their liabilities. Mature funds with many beneficiaries often run negative cash flow, which pulls them toward less volatile assets and away from venture capital.

At the same time, institutional investors show a strong home bias, already channeling significant capital into local economies and infrastructure.

The conversation is part of a broader push under the European Competitiveness Fund to mobilize private capital, including pension capital, for Europe's green and digital transformation.
